Education System in Kyrgyzstan
The Ministry of Education in Kyrgyzstan is responsible for administering Education Structure in the country. It is provided free of cost and compulsory up to 9th grade. Free education is also provided at Vocational, Secondary, Specialized and Higher levels. After Kyrgyzstan achieved independence, the ministry started working to provide better Education to people at all the levels and make Kyrgyzstan self reliant in knowledge economy.
The Education ministry is divided into three departments for better management, which are
- General Education
- Higher Education, and
- Material Support
Below the ministry level, the education chain of command includes six provinces and the city of Bishkek. Representatives from each section provides input to the ministry on local conditions.
Furthermore, the basic local administration at district level is known as (rayon), where the district Education officer hires faculty and appoints school inspectors and methodology specialists. General Education is financed from district budgets, and the College preparatory and Higher Education programs are financed by the national budget.
Nine years of school education is compulsory in Kyrgyzstan. This stage consists of four years of primary and five years of lower secondary schooling. At upper secondary level there are two types of schools; specialized secondary schools and vocational/technical secondary schools. The Ministry of Education and Science (MES) is in charge of education in Kyrgyzstan. Children start attending Pre-Schools at around 3 years of age. Pre-school classes are not compulsory in Kyrgyzstan.
Primary school usually starts at 6 or 7 years of age; children study here for Grade 1 to Grade 4. Further, students attend basic secondary education for another 5 years. The primary and basic secondary school together completes the compulsory 9 years of education in Kyrgyzstan. Students who continue education for upper secondary grade have options to choose from comprehensive or vocational streams.
Higher education leading to the award of bachelor’s degree requires completion of upper secondary schooling. Admissions are offered based on performance in upper secondary final examination and score in entrance examinations.
Kyrgyzstan joined UNESCO on June 2, 1992. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office Almaty, a Cluster Office which also covers Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. UNESCO Institute for Statistics has prepared detailed analysis on education and literacy scenario in Kyrgyzstan.
